RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1435

A resolution recognizing the Southeast Nashville Recovery Group and volunteers that assisted Southeast Nashville during and after the May 1 and 2, 2010, flood disaster.

WHEREAS, sacrificing time, talent and resources has been the cornerstone to helping the victims of the recent Nashville flood and the wake of its destruction afterwards is a typical description of our American heritage, and during the recent flooding catastrophe we continued this great tradition of people coming together to help during our community’s most critical hour; and

WHEREAS, thousands of individuals offered their help with various endeavors without expectation of any personal remuneration or recognition other than the satisfaction of knowing they helped others during their time of need; and

WHEREAS, the untiring work and dedication of countless volunteers, while certainly appreciated, too often goes without adequate recognition of the valuable contribution that is made; and

WHEREAS, these individuals along with organizations such as the 14 local churches in the Antioch area, the national faith-based teams and others that established not only commitment to the initial clean out of homes and assisting individuals in their recovery endeavored to establish an organization to not only assist initially but on into the future in the rebuild process; and

WHEREAS, the Antioch area, being a very diverse community relied on many people and organizations to understand the different cultural barriers along with the methodology to work with the community in the recovery process from the flood; and

WHEREAS, Antioch Church of Christ became the initial food and supply distribution to the community serving thousands of meals and drinking water to the victims; and

WHEREAS, Antioch United Methodist Church led by Pastor Jay Voorhees, established the center initially to send out teams and coordinate the initial recovery effort providing not only a central place for food and supply distribution but a refuge for the weary workers who did the job with the victims of the flood; and

WHEREAS, Lighthouse Ministries provided the on-going support and offices for the Southeast Nashville Recovery Group after giving up the Antioch United Methodist Church, where the organization was fully established and organized to operate as a faith-based recovery group to serve the Antioch areas and beyond during the rebuilding process; and

WHEREAS, volunteers are exemplified by individuals such as these, and although the efforts of many are recognized and honored here, our observation is not intended to ignore the efforts of those who worked without recognition, acclaim, or accolades. Our recognition of these people’s specific efforts extends beyond them and thus is also symbolic, therefore, of the efforts of the countless thousands who gave and continue to give tirelessly of themselves in the aftermath of the recent flood; and

WHEREAS, without any recognition or little assistance from outside sources, the Southeast Nashville Recovery Group developed an organization of Case Managers, Construction Managers, Volunteer Managers and Emotional and Spiritual Care Managers to work with the home owners to allow them to rebuild their homes as inexpensively and quickly as possible, setting in place a model for recovery; and

WHEREAS, Southeast Nashville Recovery Group has initiated and developed a program to use the CRWRC and their ‘Green Shirts’ to come to Nashville for the assessments needed on homes damaged in the flood which assessed over 100 homes and are about to cover the remainder of Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, Southeast Nashville Recovery Group developed and is now implementing a program sponsored by Eight Days of Hope to restore homes damaged by the flood, which will use well over 1000 volunteers during a week over the Thanksgiving holiday; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the many selfless volunteers not only throughout the Antioch Area as well as the city of Nashville who truly gave those in need a helping hand.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Southeast Nashville Recovery Group and volunteers that assisted the Antioch Area during and after the May 1 and 2, 2010, flood disaster.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
