RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1430

A resolution recognizing Jane Branstetter Stranch on her confirmation as a Federal Court of Appeals Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

WHEREAS, on August 7, 2009, Jane Branstetter Stranch was nominated by the President of the United States for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; and

WHEREAS, on September 13, 2010, more than one year later, the United States Senate confirmed Jane Branstetter Stranch to be a Judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Stranch earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Vanderbilt University in 1978, graduating in the top ten percent of her class at Vanderbilt Law School; and

WHEREAS, she began her legal career at the law firm now known as Branstetter, Stranch and Jennings, PLLC working as a law clerk during the summers between 1975 and 1978. She became an associate in the firm in 1978 and a partner in the firm in 1986, where she continued to work until her confirmation to the United States Court of Appeals; and

WHEREAS, she has practiced in the areas of Civil Litigation; Labor and Employment Law; ERISA; Class Actions and Complex Litigation; Public Utility, and other areas throughout her distinguished career; and

WHEREAS, she has been a conscientious member of her profession, having taught labor law at Belmont University, having served on the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, and having been a member of the Nashville, Tennessee, and American Bar Associations, the Nashville and Tennessee Bar Foundations, and the Lawyers Association for Women (LAW); and

WHEREAS, throughout her career Jane Branstetter Stranch has demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability and integrity, and has won the unbridled respect and admiration of her colleagues, Tennessee’s legal community, and the citizens of the City of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Jane Branstetter Stranch for the great service she has given to the citizens of Nashville and wish her every continued success on her new appointment and in her future endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Jane Branstetter Stranch on her confirmation as a Federal Court of Appeals Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.


Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Judge Jane Branstetter Stranch.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
