RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1411

A resolution urging the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to implement an energy efficiency plan that commits to reduce electricity consumption by at least one percent per year for the next five years.

WHEREAS, Tennessee homes use the most electricity in the nation at a rate twice the national average; and

WHEREAS, reducing energy costs increases consumer purchasing power, which is a benefit for our struggling economy; and

WHEREAS, energy efficiency gains are also a good fiscal practice for businesses, and investments in energy efficiency are quickly recouped through lower electric bills; and

WHEREAS, energy efficiency measures would enhance the economic competitiveness of Tennessee businesses and will create substantial numbers of new, local jobs; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Green Ribbon Committee on Environmental Sustainability adopted a goal of reducing the Metropolitan Government’s energy usage by twenty percent by 2020; and

WHEREAS, 23 states have already set energy efficiency targets, although none are within the TVA service area; and

WHEREAS, investing in energy efficiency is critical to sustain TVA’s mission to provide reliable service at the lowest possible price.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as urging TVA to set a modest energy efficiency target of one percent reduction each year for the next five years.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is hereby directed to send a copy of this Resolution to all TVA board members and to the Chief Executive Officer of TVA.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
