RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1359

A resolution recognizing Tennessee’s yearlong celebration in 2010 – the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law July 26, 1990 by President George H. Bush. The law was the result of years of work as people with disabilities addressed barriers that excluded them from work and society. The ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration is going to celebrate the successes and advancements made in the last twenty years while highlight advancements in effective communication for people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers and changing perceptions, increasing full participation in community life. However, the full promise of the ADA will only be reached if public entities remain committed in their efforts to fully implement the ADA; and

WHEREAS, when the Americans with Disabilities Act was sign into law, a founding truth of our Nation was realized for persons living with disabilities – that all citizens are entitled to the same privileges, pursuits, and civil rights and as we mark the 20th anniversary of this historic legislation, we renew our commitment to ensuring that everyone with disabilities can live free from the weight of discrimination and pursue there American dream; and

WHEREAS, on the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we celebrate and recognize the progress that has been made by reaffirming the principals of equality and inclusion and recommitting our efforts to reach full ADA compliance; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognized the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and celebrate the 20th anniversary of this civil rights law and the many contributions of individuals with disabilities.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Tennessee’s yearlong celebration in 2010 – the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Jerry Hall.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
