RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1350

A resolution recognizing the Nashville nonprofit sector for its extraordinary efforts following the May 2010 flood.

WHEREAS, there are hundreds of vibrant, active nonprofit and charitable organizations in Nashville and Davidson County that serve our community; and

WHEREAS, the nonprofit sector is a significant contributor to our economic well-being, contributing nearly ten percent of the employment and gross income to our local economy; and

WHEREAS, these nonprofit and charitable organizations supplement the services offered by Metropolitan government agencies in caring for our citizens, improving education, protecting the environment, and enhancing our quality of life; and

WHEREAS, in May 2010, the Nashville area suffered the worst flood in its history, affecting thousands of businesses and individuals, destroying homes, and disrupting our lives; and

WHEREAS, the nonprofit sector joined with the leadership of the Metropolitan Government throughout the relief and recovery process, proving itself invaluable in collecting and distributing private funds, encouraging and assigning volunteers, collecting and distributing goods and services, housing and feeding those immediately in need, helping with long term housing solutions for those who were displaced, and providing countless other vital services; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes these nonprofit and charitable agencies for their yeoman efforts in May and during the past summer.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record in recognizing, applauding, and thanking Nashville’s nonprofit agencies for collaborating with our public officials in responding to the May 2010 flood disaster in Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Center for Nonprofit Management to be read at its 2010 Salute to Excellence awards program which annually recognizes and rewards nonprofit excellence.
