RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1315

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Congressional Delegation to investigate the flood management efforts by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the first week of May 2010.

WHEREAS, the devastating flood of May 1st and 2nd, 2010, caused billions of dollars in damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure in the Nashville area; and

WHEREAS, questions have arisen regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ flood management efforts prior to, during, and immediately after the storm; and

WHEREAS, allegations have been made that flood sensors on the Cumberland River may not have been operating properly, and that the Corps of Engineers continued to release water after it became evident that the magnitude of the flooding was of historic proportions; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County that Congressional hearings be held to determine whether the Corps of Engineers took the appropriate actions in managing the flood, and whether policy changes are needed to prevent similar future disasters.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee Congressional Delegation to initiate investigative hearings regarding the water releases from area dams by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the flooding the Nashville area experienced in early May 2010.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to each member of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation and to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
