RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1268

A resolution recognizing Catherine McTamaney and Alan Murdock for their dedicated service to the people of East Nashville.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that recognition of those individuals, who through their extraordinary efforts have distinguished themselves as a leader of whom we can all be proud; and

WHEREAS, Catherine McTamaney and Alan Murdock are such individuals, and although the efforts of many, like Catherine and Alan, are recognized and honored here, our observation is not intended to ignore the efforts of those who worked without recognition, acclaim, or accolades. Our recognition of their efforts is symbolic, therefore, of the efforts of countless thousands who gave and continue to give tirelessly of themselves in the aftermath of the recent flood; and

WHEREAS, when not saving entire communities, Catherine is heavily involved in the everyday affairs of our community. She loves theater and you can usually catch her and her entire family performing in various productions throughout the year. Most recently she has been active with ReDiscover East, the Lockeland Springs Neighborhood Association and organized and ran the Lockeland Springs Tour of Homes to name a few of her many contributions; and

WHEREAS, her efforts have touched the lives of over 400 families, and she truly understands the ideal of community involvement through her gift of passion, organization and management of over 1500 volunteers working side by side to help those in need; and

WHEREAS, Alan is the owner of ArtHouse Gardens, a garden shop and landscaping service in Five Points in the middle of East Nashville; and

WHEREAS, on May 1st, before the rain had even stopped, Alan organized a group of volunteers to help respond to the flood conditions in East Nashville and by May 13th, Alan's efforts had increased to a command center in the middle of his garden center, from which over 1600 volunteers were dispatched to close to 400 homes. In the two weeks following the flood, Alan turned his place of business into a center of service, acknowledged by relief organizations, including Hands On Nashville, as a model of neighborhood volunteerism and relief and the Red Cross and Samaritan's Purse noted they had neither seen such a fast response in a disaster as they had in East Nashville; and

WHEREAS, the love of their community, East Nashville and their remarkable compassion and dedication as a public servant is a tribute to their reliance on the time-honored values of hard work and common sense and the ability to work well with people from all walks of life to ensure the revitalization of the community; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Catherine McTamaney and Alan Murdock for their leadership, drive and community advocacy and convey to them our appreciation for the hard work they are doing in the community.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Catherine McTamaney and Alan Murdock for their dedicated service to the people of East Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Catherine McTamaney and Alan Murdock.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
