RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1197

A resolution recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools 2011 Teacher of the Year from each tier – elementary, middle and high school.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that we should recognize those outstanding teachers who have devoted their careers to providing the highest quality education for Tennessee’s students; and

WHEREAS, Janis Aston, Theresa DuLaney and Paula Nicole Burgess are such educators, who have distinguished themselves as professionals of the greatest dedication, ability, and integrity; and

WHEREAS, these three remarkable individuals are extremely talented and compassionate educators who work assiduously to motivate their students to reach their full potential, both as scholars and as citizens; and

WHEREAS, Janis Aston, music teacher at Wharton Elementary School, who has been teaching for 19 years, was named 2011 Teacher of the Year for elementary schools; and

WHEREAS, Theresa DuLaney, sixth grade science and math teacher at Bellevue Middle, who has been teaching for 12 years, was named 2011 Teacher of the Year for middle schools; and

WHEREAS, Paula Nicole Burgess, Algebra I and II Honors teacher at Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High, who has been teaching for 23 years, was named 2011 Teacher of the Year for high schools; and

WHEREAS, Janis Aston, Theresa DuLaney and Paula Nicole Burgess have served with the utmost acumen and alacrity throughout their outstanding tenure with the Metropolitan Nashville Public school system; and

WHEREAS, they each bring enthusiasm and energy to their students, each has an excellent repertoire of teaching strategies, creativity, innovation, and a vision that has brought invaluable assets to not only the classroom but to their school; and

WHEREAS, Janis, Theresa and Paula truly serve as an inspiration to their colleagues and students alike, and their friendship and counsel are highly valued by those who are fortunate to know them; and

WHEREAS, they each truly epitomize the dedicated teacher who is wholly committed to the highest ideals of public service and quality education for all, and they should be recognized; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Janis Aston, Theresa DuLaney and Paula Nicole Burgess on being named 2011 Teachers of the Year from each tier – elementary, middle and high school, commend their exceptional service to the children of the City of Nashville, salute their professional expertise and personal excellence, and wish them all the best.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools 2011 Teacher of the Year from each tier – elementary, middle and high school.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Janis Aston, Theresa DuLaney and Paula Nicole Burgess.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
