RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1195

A resolution recognizing Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell of New Livingstone Baptist Church and the upcoming dedication of their new expansion.

WHEREAS, Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell, a truly inspirational man has shared his wisdom and guidance with the congregation of New Livingstone Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell is a native Tennessean, born and raised in Nashville, the second son born to Charles and Julia Mitchell, was united in marriage to Beverly his soul make of 36 years and from their blessed union they became parents of one daughter, Kimberly Stevenson and grandparents to one granddaughter Parker; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Mitchell attended St. Vincent De Paul and John Early Elementary Schools. A graduate of North High School previously located on Clay Street, where he earned the nickname “Clay Street Slim.” He was an active member of the basketball and football teams and was voted, along with his wife Beverly Merrell Mitchell, as “Most Popular” in their senior year; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Mitchell attended Tennessee State University and Emmanuel Theological Seminary, where he was president of the school’s alumni and graduated top of his class; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Mitchell worked in a family owned (owned by his father “Chuck Mitchell”) record shop known as the “Jam.” He is employed in the management division for Metro Codes Administration and has worked for that department for 23 years; and

WHEREAS, Pastor Mitchell became a member of New Hope Baptist church on Sulphur Creek Road under the leadership of the late Pastor William Scruggs, Sr. where he was a deacon and later answered his calling into the ministry. After only six months in the ministry, he was asked to pastor New Livingstone Baptist Church and has been the leader and shepherd of New Livingstone for 28 years; and

WHEREAS, a few of Pastor Mitchell’s accomplishments are: receiving the PHILANTROPIST AWARD, coordinated “Taking It To The Streets-(Welcome to the New Sam Levy Neighborhood), organized Middle Tennessee Diversity Contractors Association (MTDCA) for Black Contractors, received the R.H. Boyd Minority Business Advocate Award, organized “First Band-Aid Conference (raising awareness about AIDS and HIV) and organized E-4:12 to Renew Hope in Self, Restore Families and Reclaim our Communities; and

WHEREAS, in February 2009, New Livingstone Baptist Church began an expansion project in which Pastor Mitchell did a sermon entitled “What Meaneth These Stones”. (Joshua 4:20-24), where he asked that church members write their name and an amount on a block as a pledge towards the expansion fund thus when the wall was knocked down the members were able to take the block home; and

WHEREAS, the meaning of that is that when someone would see the stone at their house the person would more than likely ask why that stone is there and the member would tell them it is a memorial of the faith they had for the expansion. The project started September 29, 2009 and is expected to be finished in 2010.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell as he continues his ministry and the congregation of New Livingstone Baptist Church on their upcoming dedication of their new expansion.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell of New Livingstone Baptist Church and the upcoming dedication of their new expansion.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Pastor Ronnie T. Mitchell.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
