RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1134

A resolution recognizing Granbery Elementary School.

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Education presented Granbery Elementary School with a special commendation for outstanding work in delivery of Character Education/’Best Practices’; and

WHEREAS, Granbery Elementary School’s Recycling/Environmental Awareness program was initiated in September of 1989, when ‘Character Education’ was just beginning; and

WHEREAS, Granbery Elementary School’s Recycling/Environmental Awareness program strives to establish potentially life-long attitudes and habits of responsible stewardship by providing a consistent, strong message of the importance of taking care of the Earth, of the importance of making reasonable, responsible choices; and

WHEREAS, environmental activities promote positive-action behaviors and values, such as Caring, citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Commitment, etc. Simultaneously, a much needed shift change in attitudes and behaviors regarding solid waste/garbage – that is, the value of Stewardship – could be instilled as well; and

WHEREAS, Granbery School also provides meaningful activities--on a daily basis and year-round--that encourage students to put stewardship values into practice, that ‘un-make the garbage’ and that also demonstrate simple, effective, sustainable solid waste management approaches; and

WHEREAS, the two primary hands-on education components are: 1) a year-round weekly Saturday morning recycling drop-off site that is staffed by student volunteers, teachers, parents and other community members, and 2) the daily food-waste separation/composting approach that diverts organic waste generated in the school cafeteria and kitchen preparation areas; and

WHEREAS, since its inception in 1989, Granbery School’s Recycling/Environmental Awareness program has received numerous environmental awards and recognitions on the local, state and national levels; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Granbery Elementary School’s Recycling/Environmental Awareness program and their commitment to continue to realize recycling’s full promise for generations to come.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Granbery Elementary School.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Principal Lori Donahue, School Counselor Jenny Cunningham, and Recycling Coach Sherry Force on behalf of the students, teachers and staff of Granbery Elementary.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
