RESOLUTION NO. RS2010-1130

A resolution recognizing Reginald W. Coopwood, M.D, upon his departure from the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority.

WHEREAS, Dr. Reginald Coopwood, Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority has played an instrumental role at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, Knowles Assisted Living and Adult Day Services and Bordeaux Long Term Care over the past ten years and is well deserving of recognition at this time; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood became the first appointed chief medical officer for Nashville General Hospital at Meharry and the first African- American and physician-lead chief executive officer of the Hospital Authority; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood played an instrumental role in establishing Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, Knowles Assisted Living and Adult Day Services and Bordeaux Long Term Care as true competitors in Nashville’s healthcare arena, providing the residents of Nashville and Davidson County a high quality, healthcare continuum second to none; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood is involved with many community and civic organizes, serving on the boards of the National Public Health and Hospital Institute (NPHHI), Nashville Health Care Council, Health Information Partnership for Tennessee (HIP TN), Tennessee Hospital Association and the American Heart Association. A 2005 alumnus of Leadership Nashville and a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, Dr. Coopwood serves on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Public Hospitals (NAPH), the Governing Council of the American Hospital Association’s Metro Hospitals division, and the Governor’s e-Health Council for the State of Tennessee. He is the Chair of the Tennessee Hospital Association’s Diversity Committee and is a member of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings Diversity Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood has received several awards and accolades including being named to this year’s Nashville Business Journal’s Healthcare Heroes section for Company Leader, and has been listed in the Nashville Business Journal’s Top 100 in Healthcare in 2005 and 2006; BusinessTN’s 25 Top Hospital Operators in 2007 and 2009 and on February 25, 2010, Dr. Coopwood was awarded the Community Health Charities of Tennessee, Champions in Health, 2010 “Leader in Health” award; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood is to be commended for his timeless efforts and commitment in the delivery of healthcare to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County, first as a Meharry Medical College student, then as a board certified surgeon and finally as a physician executive, leading the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coopwood’s visionary, strong and effective leadership, throughout his tenure has benefited the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County and especially those who are in need of quality affordable healthcare; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dr. Reginald Coopwood, for the service he has provided the Hospital Authority and the citizens of Nashville and Davidson Count and wish him much success as he moves forward in his career.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Reginald W. Coopwood, M.D, upon his departure from the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Reginald Coopwood.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
