RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-951

A resolution requesting all Metropolitan Government departments and agencies to use the word “Nashville” when referring to their department or agency, as opposed to “Metropolitan” or “Metro”.

WHEREAS, the voters of Nashville and Davidson County approved a consolidated city-county form of government in 1963 known as “The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County”; and

WHEREAS, our consolidated form of government has served the citizens very well over the years and has kept our property taxes substantially lower than our peer cities; and

WHEREAS, many departments and agencies of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County use the words “Metro” or “Metropolitan” in official documents, publications, signs, and vehicle markings; and

WHEREAS, although Nashvillians have benefitted from our consolidated form of government, use of the words “Metro” or “Metropolitan” in department names without the word “Nashville” erodes our identity as a city and causes confusion for visitors; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of our city to use the name “Nashville” when referring to our various departments and agencies.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting all Metropolitan Government departments and agencies to use the word “Nashville” when referring to their department or agency, as opposed to “Metropolitan” or “Metro”.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to all Metropolitan Government department heads.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
