RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-910

A resolution recognizing and supporting the Native American Indian Association on their efforts to raise funds and to designate October as “Native American Indian Month” in Tennessee.

WHEREAS, there are approximately 15, 000 Native Americans residing in Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the Native American Indian Association continues to raise funds to build an American Indian Cultural Center, known as the Circle of Life Indian Cultural Center, in Nashville in order to provide a venue for education about Native Americans in Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the much anticipated Native American Indian Association of Tennessee Pow-Wow & Fall Festival will bring together thousands of families from across the United States and Canada to Long Hunter State Park on the third weekend in October; and

WHEREAS, the Native American Indian Association is one such commendable event that is celebrating its 28th Anniversary this year as one of the largest pow-wows east of the Mississippi River; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the myriad vendors selling their wares of traditional Native American Indian food, arts and crafts the festival will also feature Native American Indian dancers in full regalia, musicians, singers, storytelling and Indian games; and

WHEREAS, this festival promises a unique social and educational experience detailing the important aspects of the Native American Indian culture; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes October as “Native American Indian Month” and extend our heartiest wishes for a successful festival.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and supporting the Native American Indian Association on their efforts to raise funds and to designate October as “Native American Indian Month” in Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Native American Indian Association.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
