RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-905

A resolution recognizing and honoring Sergeant Mark Chesnut of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for his bravery in the line of duty.

WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize those who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of the citizens of Nashville and who perform above and beyond the call of duty; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mark Chesnut, a 22 year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is one such outstanding public servant dedicated to the enforcement of the law; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Chesnut serves as part of the drug interdiction enforcement effort in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, on the afternoon of Thursday, June 25, 2009, while making apparently a routine traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Bellevue, Sergeant Mark Chesnut while sitting in his patrol car entering information into his in-car computer was shot several times critically wounding him; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mark Chesnut , despite numerous injuries, had the presence of mind, composure and determination to contact dispatch and give them crucial information of the suspects that eventually led to their capture; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Mark Chesnut performs his duties as a police officer with the utmost skill, dedication, and professionalism; he deserves proper recognition for the role he played in the apprehension of the suspects; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Sergeant Mark Chesnut , an exceptional officer and we wish him well.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring Sergeant Mark Chesnut of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for his bravery in the line of duty.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Metro Sergeant Mark Chesnut.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
