RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-867

A resolution requesting the United States Postal Service not to close the Arcade Post Office in downtown Nashville.

WHEREAS, in an effort to reduce costs, the United States Postal Service is considering closing the post office located in the Arcade, which stretches between Fourth and Fifth Avenues in downtown Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Arcade post office box customers have been advised that they would be relocated to the 901 Broadway post office location; and

WHEREAS, the Arcade Post Office, which has been in operation since 1903, provides a vital service to downtown Nashville’s 47,000 workers; and

WHEREAS, the Arcade Post Office’s location makes it convenient for downtown residents, workers, and businesses to take care of their postal needs during working hours; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the functionality and convenience of the Arcade Post Office, the building itself is of an historic art deco design, and should be preserved as one of the remaining downtown icons; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the citizens of the Metropolitan Government that the United States Postal Service abandon its plans to close the Arcade Post Office.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the United States Postal Service not to close the Arcade Post Office in downtown Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the United States Post Master and to Congressman Jim Cooper.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
