RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-837

A resolution recognizing the Hillsboro High School football team for winning the 2008 4A State Championship.

WHEREAS, the Hillsboro High School football team won a berth to play in the 2008 4A State Football Championship, having finished the season with an (8-2) record and advanced to the State Championship game with a 4-0 record in the playoffs bringing their record to 12-2; and

WHEREAS, the Hillsboro High School Burros were considered by many to be overwhelming underdogs going into the 2008 BlueCross Bowel; and

WHEREAS, the Burros’ opponent, the four-time defending state champion Maryville High School Rebels, came into the championship game with an undefeated record of (14-0); and

WHEREAS, the Burros opponent also had not lost a game since the third game of their 2000 season, giving them a record from that game of (74-0) which at that time was the longest winning streak in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Hillsboro High School Burros overcame the odds and defeated the Maryville High School Rebels by a score of 10-7 to win the 2008 4A State Football Championship; and

WHEREAS, Maryville High’s ranking as the 16th best team in the nation and their 74-game win streak garnered the Burros national attention from ESPN as well as recognition by newspapers throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, the Hillsboro High School football team demonstrated unwavering courage and commitment in winning their second state championship, the first being in 2003; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Hillsboro High School football team for their incredible athletic achievement in winning the 2008 4A State Football Championship over one of the best football teams in the country.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Hillsboro High School football team for winning the 2008 4A State Championship.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Head Coach Scott Blade on behalf of the coaching staff and members of the team.


Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
