RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-834

A resolution recognizing Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry upon her retirement with the Metropolitan Government.

WHEREAS, on May 29, 2009, Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry, Director of Human Resources retired after 6 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shell-Berry began her career as a (CETA) Clerk in the Department of Personnel for the State of Tennessee. She has held the positions of Personnel Technician, Supervisor Personnel Technician, Department of Safety Assistant Director of Personnel, Department of Personnel Director of Transactions where she stayed for 6 months until after ten years with the State of Tennessee she was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Personnel and during the next 18 years she served as either the Deputy or Assistant Commissioner of Personnel until she was promoted to Commissioner of Personnel in 2000 where she remained until her retirement in 2002; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the State of Tennessee she accepted an assignment as the interim Director of Social Services for the Metropolitan Government and after 18 months she accepted the position of Director of Human Resources for the Metropolitan Government; and remained there until her second retirement in May 2009; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure with Human Resources some of her major accomplishments include implementing a new on-line Applicant Tracking and Pension Calculation System; distributing pension statements; raising significant funds for Metro's Combined Charities Campaign (MECCC); updating the Performance Evaluation System; establishing a Service Award and Recognition Program for employees, and placing employees who had been impacted by Reduction in Force; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shell-Berry has been actively involved with many community and civic organizations such as Family and Children Services, YWCA, Girl and Boy Scouts, United Way Allocation Panel and very active in her church; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shell-Berry was nominated by the Governor as a national employee of the year for her work with reductions in force with the State of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career, Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability and integrity, in winning the unbridled respect and admiration of her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry for her invaluable service to the Metropolitan Government and wish her well on her retirement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry upon her retirement with the Metropolitan Government.


Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dorothy “Dot” Shell-Berry.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
