RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-740

A resolution recognizing the Music City Chorus (Nashville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) on their accomplishments in music.

WHEREAS, during the weekend of March 21 – March 22, 2009, The Music City Chorus competed in the Dixie District Chorus Contest in Winston Salem , NC and won the 1st place championship; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the 2008 Fall Dixie District competition in Chattanooga, TN, the Music City Chorus was invited to compete in the International Competition being held in Anaheim, California in July 2009 as being the 19th rated Chorus in the Barbershop Harmony Society; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society was formed as the Capitol City Chorus in 1948 under the leadership of Lynn Peal meeting in the Reservoir Hill Club House with 25 members. Various members of the professional music community have contributed to the success of the Chapter through the past 60 years; and

WHEREAS, this choral ensemble is made up of men from various backgrounds who take time out of their everyday life to come together to sing and perform songs in the Uniquely American Barbershop style with its roots traceable to the community activities of local barbershops of the 1890s as central gathering places, ear singing (wood-shedding) harmonies and exhibiting an influence of the African American Negro spirituals; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Music City Chorus are talented singers who, through their dedication, outstanding work ethic, and performances, have made significant contributions to the musical heritage of Tennessee. This was significant in attracting the International Headquarters of the Barbershop Harmony Society to Nashville making Nashville the center of Barbershop Harmony activity for the entire world; and

WHEREAS, the Music City Chorus and its members have traveled extensively performing at venues throughout Tennessee and the United States and have received several accolades including District Championships, International Rankings and starting acts for major events; and

WHEREAS, under the direction of Mike O’Neill, a continuing goal for the chorus is to give both professional and non-professional singers in Nashville a chance to participate in Barbershop - a uniquely American musical experience, building a bridge between the various genres of music that flourish within Nashville’s music community; and

WHEREAS, a major objective is to promote harmony and music education in the Nashville/ Middle Tennessee community and schools with an objective of promoting music education and providing an ongoing opportunity for men to sing beyond the years of formal education

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Music City Chorus (Nashville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) for their distinct style of vocal music.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Music City Chorus (Nashville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) on their accomplishments in music.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Shane Scott, President on behalf of the Music City Chorus.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
