RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-736

A resolution recognizing and congratulating Donna Nicely, Director of Nashville Public Library, winner of the Public Library Association’s 2009 Charlie Robinson Award.

WHEREAS, Donna Nicely, director of the Nashville Public Library, is being honored for winning the national 2009 Charlie Robinson Award from the Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association, for her innovative leadership of the Nashville Public Library and for her work to improve American public libraries and for her many years of effort to keep libraries at the forefront; and

WHEREAS, established in 1997, the Charlie Robinson Award honors a public library director who, over a period of seven years, has been a risk taker, an innovator and/or a change agent in a public library and should have been active in national and other professional associations and be known for developing and implementing programs which are responsive to the need of community residents; and

WHEREAS, Donna Nicely is an extremely compassionate director who works assiduously to assure the provision of high-quality library services to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, she truly serves as an inspiration to her professional colleagues and staff alike, and her friendship and counsel are highly valued by those who are fortunate to know and work with her; and

WHEREAS, her colleagues and staff nominated her for this national award; and

WHEREAS, Donna Nicely epitomizes the ideal of the dedicated individual who is committed to the highest ideals of public service as she oversees Nashville’s public library system that includes the downtown Main Library and 20 branch libraries, the Metro Archives, the Nashville Talking Library and the Library Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Donna Nicely, Director of Nashville Public Library, winner of the 2009 Charlie Robinson Award and commend her exceptional service, her professional expertise and her accomplishments.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Donna Nicely, Director of Nashville Public Library, winner of the Public Library Association’s 2009 Charlie Robinson Award.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Donna Nicely, Director of Nashville Public Library.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
