RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-653

A resolution recognizing Granbery Elementary School’s recycling/environmental awareness program.

WHEREAS, Granbery Elementary School’s recycling/environmental awareness program was selected as the 2008-2009 “School (K-12) Recycler of the Year” sponsored by the Tennessee Recycling Coalition; and

WHEREAS, WHEREAS, the Tennessee Recycling Coalition is a non-profit organization made up of members representing private business, federal and state agencies, cities and counties non-profit organizations, trade associations, education institutions and individuals who promote the adoption of recycling and waste reduction programs in the state of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Granbery Elementary School’s recycling/environmental awareness program strives to establish potentially life-long attitudes and habits of responsible stewardship by providing a consistent, strong message of the importance of taking care of the Earth, of the importance of making reasonable, responsible choices; and

WHEREAS, Granbery also provides meaningful activities—on a daily basis and year round—are provided that encourage students to put stewardship values into practice, that ‘un-make the garbage’ and that also demonstrate simple, effective, sustainable solid waste management approaches; and

WHEREAS, although there are several activities throughout the year, the two primary hands-on education components are: a year-round weekly Saturday morning recycling drop-off site that is staffed by student volunteers, teachers, parents and other community members and the daily food-waste separation/composting approach that diverts organic waste generated in the school cafeteria and kitchen preparation areas; and

WHEREAS, the school publishes a weekly newsletter as not only a means of recognizing students for their service to their school and community; but also to communicate/raise awareness of environmental issues/activities to our extended school family and the program has been recognized on the local and state levels; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Granbery Elementary School’s recycling/environmental awareness program for their achievements over the past nineteen years and their commitment to continue to realize recycling’s full promise for generations to come.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Granbery Elementary School’s recycling/environmental awareness program.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Principal Lori Donahue on behalf of the students, teachers and staff of Granbery Elementary.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
