RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-651

A resolution recognizing Russell Bauman Brecheen, Jr., awarded Keep America Beautiful’s Iron Eyes Cody Award for 2008.

WHEREAS, Russell Bauman Brechenn, Jr., of the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Beautification and Environment Commission, was honored with winning the prestigious national Iron Eyes Cody Award for 2008; and

WHEREAS, the Iron Eyes Cody Award was named in honor of Keep America Beautiful's landmark public awareness campaign of the 1970s, “People Start Pollution People Can Stop It,” which featured the iconic face and tear of Iron Eyes Cody and is credited with awakening the environmental consciousness of an entire generation; and

WHEREAS, this award, is given to a man who demonstrates outstanding leadership in promoting public awareness of the importance of litter prevention, beautification and community improvement, responsible solid waste management, and preserving and enhancing natural resources and public lands

WHEREAS, on any given day you can find Mr. Brecheen doing community improvement work, picking up trash, removing illegal signs, promoting recycling and preaching the gospel of tidiness; and

WHEREAS, he is very instrumental in several programs, asking Wal-Mart into allowing a recycling drop-off center in his neighborhood, cleaned up Seven Mile Creek, created a 24/7 recycling drop-off site with proceeds of the recyclables being donated to the Nashville Alliance for Public Schools, picks up trash in Whitfield park and hold at least four major adopt-a-street cleanups a year; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Russell Bauman Brecheen, Jr., on receiving the Iron Eyes Cody award and for his continuing dedication, time and energy in helping cleanup Nashville.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Russell Bauman Brecheen, Jr., awarded Keep America Beautiful’s Iron Eyes Cody Award for 2008.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Russell Bauman Brecheen, Jr.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
