RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-648

A resolution requesting The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to join as a signatory to Tennessee’s Water Blueprint.

WHEREAS, Tennessee currently has over 60,000 miles of streams and rivers, and more than 500,000 lake and reservoir acres; and

WHEREAS, the droughts of the past two summers in Tennessee and much of the southeast have raised serious questions about the availability for quality water; and

WHEREAS, in response to these questions, a number of nonprofit environmental organizations produced an informative document entitled Tennessee’s Water Blueprint to explain the challenges facing Tennessee’s water supply and to provide recommendations based upon successful practices to protect our rivers, streams and reservoirs; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee’s Water Blueprint, a copy of which is attached to this Resolution and incorporated herein by reference, discusses (1) the importance of headwaters, watersheds and stream buffers; (2) the importance of preserving aquatic wildlife; (3) challenges facing various parts of the state as a result of development; (4) water quality solutions; and (5) policy recommendations to ensure future generations have sufficient clean water; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County sign on in support of Tennessee’s Water Blueprint to demonstrate our commitment to water quality in Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and Metro Water Services to sign on in support of Tennessee’s Water Blueprint.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Karl Dean and to Scott Potter, the Director of Metro Water Services.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
