RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-631
A resolution proclaiming Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. as Earth Hour Nashville 2009.
WHEREAS, few people realize the impressive biodiversity of Middle Tennessee’s rivers and streams; and
WHEREAS, Tennessee is among the most species-rich temperate river ecosystems in the world; and
WHEREAS, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) established the Southeast Rivers and Streams Program, with a staff based in Nashville, to help protect and restore this unique ecoregion; and
WHEREAS, one of WWF’s global climate initiatives is Earth Hour, an annual global climate event; and
WHEREAS, Earth Hour was first celebrated two years ago in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million people and thousands of businesses turned out their lights, allowing the message about climate change to shine brightly; and
WHEREAS, tens of millions of people around the world will come together once again – on March 28, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. – to make a bold statement about climate change by doing something quite simple – turning off their lights for one hour; and
WHEREAS, Nashville is fortunate to be designated as one of only seven American flagship cities participating in Earth Hour 2009 – others include Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, Earth Hour complements the many environmental initiatives that are already in place in Nashville; and
WHEREAS, this is a tremendous honor for our city, and this Council will join with the Mayor and citizens of Nashville and Davidson County to demonstrate our concern for the environment on a global scale.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 p.m., to be celebrated as Earth Hour Nashville 2009.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to representatives of Earth Hour Nashville 2009.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
