RESOLUTION NO. RS2009-601

A resolution recognizing the Walk/Bike Nashville program on their 10th year anniversary.

WHEREAS, Walk/Bike Nashville, which is an advocacy group that has worked to promote improvements to walking and bicycling conditions was founded in October of 1998 with Kibby Clayton as its first president; and

WHEREAS, Walk/Bike Nashville has worked with Metro agencies, council members, the Mayor’s office to ensure that the needs of Nashville’s pedestrians and cyclists are met and to find ways to make our city better; and

WHEREAS, in addition to its advocacy of a better built environment for pedestrian and cyclists, Walk/Bike Nashville has joined with Metro agencies including Metro Planning and the Health Department to make the Music City Moves partnership to successfully compete for an Active Living by Design grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation; and

WHEREAS, part of this partnership, Walk/Bike Nashville started the Tour de Nash, an urban bike ride and walk designed to introduce Nashvillians to the bikeways and walkways available in their city. This event is now in its sixth year and draws over 1200 people to participate; and

WHEREAS, this partnership grant also helped Walk/Bike Nashville start the Music City Moves Kids! program in local elementary schools to teach 3rd and 4th graders how to walk and bike safely to school as well as other locations; and

WHEREAS, WBN has teamed up with the Metro Public Schools to win additional Safe Routes to School grant awards to bring this program to additional schools and in addition, Walk/Bike Nashville has just recently received a second grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation to train Metro physical education teachers to teach the Music City Moves Kids! Programs; and

WHEREAS, Walk/Bike Nashville has also assisted with the various events of Walk Nashville Week; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Walk/Bike Nashville program and continued success in his future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Walk/Bike Nashville program on their 10th anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Sean Davies, President of Walk/Bike Nashville.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
