SUBSTITUTE RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-589

A resolution requesting all departments and agencies of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to stop purchasing, consuming and serving bottled water.

WHEREAS, the country is currently experiencing an economic recession and such recession is resulting in economic hardship; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government is not immune from the effects of the recession; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government’s budget is being impacted by shortfalls in revenue due to the recession; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government has elective contracts for various products for use by its departments and agencies; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government should in the time of recession and budgetary strain review, revise and terminate those contracts and/or purchases which are elective and not necessary for the operation of its departments and agencies.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as requesting that all departments and agencies within the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, to the greatest extent practicable, cease purchasing single-serve commercial bottled water, except where required by contract, in times of emergency, or when the use of such bottled water is in the manifest interest of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is hereby directed to send a copy of this Resolution to all Metropolitan Government department heads and the executive directors of Metropolitan Government boards and commissions.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
