RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-526

A resolution recognizing Metro Police Canine Officer Jerry Denton and his partner Roscoe.

WHEREAS, Metro Police Canine Officer Jerry Denton and his partner Roscoe have been named the U.S. Police Canine Association’s national patrol team for the second quarter of 2008; and

WHEREAS, Officer Jerry Denton is a graduate of the Police Academy, a seven-year Metropolitan Police Department veteran who worked in patrol since November of 2001, before being transferred to the Canine Unit in December of 2004; and

WHEREAS, Roscoe is four-year-old German shepherd who graduated from the Police Department’s Canine Patrol School in May of 2005 and began his duties later on that month; and

WHEREAS, in the early morning hours of June 1, Officer Denton and Roscoe began tracking an armed home invasion suspect from Rose Park Drive in a heavy rain storm; and

WHEREAS, when they arrived at a steep drop off, Officer Denton used his lead to safely lower Roscoe to the level below and commanded Roscoe to “stay,” and began to descend the embankment when Officer Denton slipped and fell in the darkness, causing a gash to his leg that later required stitches; and

WHEREAS, the track took Officer Denton and Roscoe through several more yards, a swollen creek and over two fences before Roscoe apprehended the suspect hiding in bushes near the front porch of a home; and

WHEREAS, “Our Canine Unit, with dedicated and outstanding members like Jerry Denton and Roscoe, is a key component of this police department’s daily efforts to make Nashville’s neighborhoods safer,” Chief Ronal Serpas said; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Officer Jerry Denton and Roscoe as national winners for the second quarter and wish them best of luck as they are considered for the U.S. Police Canine Association’s patrol team of the year.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Metro Police Canine Officer Jerry Denton and his partner Roscoe.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Metro Police Canine Officer Jerry Denton.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
