RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-525
A resolution recognizing Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Police Department Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop on the occasion of his retirement.
WHEREAS, on October 31, 2008, Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop, recently completed his remarkable and distinguished career in law enforcement with the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Police Department, after twenty-eight years of exemplary service; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop’s noteworthy 28-year career of law enforcement with the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Police Department began in January of 1980, and steadily rose through the ranks; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Police Department Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop began his police career as a Patrol Officer, from February 1981 to December 1986, when he became a Recruit Operations Supervisor at the Training Center until April 1991; promoted to Sergeant in July of 1987, and later promoted to Lieutenant in October 1989; and
WHEREAS, in September of 1990 he moved to the Vice Control Division where he served until April of 1991, and then transferred to the Patrol Division. In July 1998 he transferred to the Central Precinct and was promoted to Captain where he served until May of 2001; in May of 2001 he served as Assistant Chief of Police in the Investigative Services Bureau until May of 2004 when he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Field Operations Bureau, a post he would hold with distinction until his retirement; and
WHEREAS, through his many positions within the Metropolitan Police Department he has remained dedicated to the honor of his profession, helpful to all in need, and respected by many in the community; and
WHEREAS, he remains firm in his belief that law enforcement officials, who gain the attention of the general public, should hold themselves to the highest of standards, a testament to the unwavering commitment to excellence he has exhibited each and every day as a law enforcement official; and
WHEREAS, throughout his estimable career, Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop has demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability and integrity, winning the unbridled respect and admiration of his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, no stranger to award and accolades during his career with the Metropolitan Police Department, Joseph Bishop received the Leadership Nashville Scholarship, Class of 2001 in 2000; he was also the recipient of the South Nashville Area Business Council, Crime Awareness Award in 1999, the Exemplary Service Award in 1997, for duties performed while acting in the capacity of West Sector Commander, the Distinguished Service Award in 1996, for hostage rescue operation, the Officer of the Year in 1985 and the Odd Fellows Award in 1983, along with numerous certificates for attending and participating in various training exercises and seminars; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop for his invaluable service he has given to the Metropolitan Police Department and the City of Nashville and wish him well on his retirement from Metro and congratulate him on his new position as Chief of Police in Columbia, Tennessee.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Police Department Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop on the occasion of his retirement.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Deputy Chief Joseph Bishop upon his retirement.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
