RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-523

A resolution recognizing Executive Director Ann Roberts of the Historical Commission of Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County on the occasion of her retirement.

WHEREAS, on August 29, 2008, Ann Roberts, retired, having served with distinction for 26 years presiding over the city’s Historical Commission, thus playing key roles in preserving landmarks such as Ryman Auditorium, Union Station, Fort Negley, Customs House, and the Parthenon, and giving new life to historic areas; and

WHEREAS, Ann Robert’s noteworthy accomplishments during her 32-year career at the Historical Commission include preserving notable landmarks, overseeing 19 historical districts applied to Davidson County neighborhoods, writing and editing numerous publications related to local architecture and history, helping to found The DISTRICT, the Nashville Urban Design Forum, and the Nashville City Cemetery Association; and

WHEREAS, a native of Arkansas, born on October 26, 1938, Ann Roberts is a 1956 graduate of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; she attended Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis), where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in English, and Vanderbilt University where she earned a Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences; and

WHEREAS, she was a teacher in Memphis before moving to Nashville in 1970, then was hired 6/14/1976 by the Historical Commission and promoted to Executive Director on 10/16/1982; and

WHEREAS, she has participated in the revitalization of neighborhoods such as Edgefield, Lockeland Springs, Woodland in Waverly, Richland-West End, and Germantown, understanding that they enrich the quality of life in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, no stranger to awards and accolades during her extraordinary career, Ann received a Presidential Citation from the American Institute of Architects for leadership following the disastrous 1998 Tornado and the President’s Award from the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the AIA for contributions to architecture and the arts; and

WHEREAS, throughout her estimable career, Ann Roberts has demonstrated the utmost professionalism, ability, and integrity, winning the unbridled respect and admiration of her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Ann Roberts for the great service she has given to the City of Nashville and wish for her a happy and gratifying retirement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Executive Director Ann Roberts of the Historical Commission of Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County on the occasion of her retirement.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Ann Roberts upon her retirement.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
