RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-488

A resolution requesting the Board of Parks and Recreation to place yellow ribbons in the Public Square to honor the men and women of our Armed Services serving overseas.

WHEREAS, the United States remains engaged in military conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County, whether supportive of this country's military actions or not, should agree that we need to remember our men and women of the Armed Services serving in Iraq and in other parts of the world who face danger on a daily basis; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that we not forget the brave men and women who have left their family and friends behind to serve our country; and

WHEREAS, as we approach Veteran’s Day on November 11, 2008, it is appropriate that the Metropolitan Government take steps to show our support for these men and women serving in the Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, by placing yellow ribbons in several visible places around the City's Public Square, we, as a City, can show our support and appreciation for those men and women that are in harm's way overseas.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation to place yellow ribbons in appropriate places in the Public Square as a way to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces serving our country in conflict overseas.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Karl Dean, to Parks Director Roy Wilson, and to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
