RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-425

A resolution recognizing Burton H. Hummell upon his retirement with the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission.

WHEREAS, in June of 2008, Burton H. Hummell, one of the original commissioners of the Metropolitan Convention Center, retired after twenty-two years of service; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Metropolitan Convention Center, Commissioner Hummell served on every committee of the commission, often serving as committee chairman, including representing the Metropolitan Convention Center at the monthly Nashville Hotel/Motel Association meetings; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell was influential in bringing innovative and creative ideas in the marketing, operations, and fiscal management of the Nashville Convention Center; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell has been instrumental in the success of the Nashville Convention Center, he could be nicknamed the “Historian” in that he often shared historical facts/information about the development of the Nashville Convention Center as well as the building of the connector between the Nashville Convention Center and Sommet Center; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell has been actively involved with many community and civic organizations where he has been on the Board of Directors of the Nashville Symphony, Board of Directors of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing’s Julia Hereford Society, Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation, Tennessee Chapter, Corporate Board at Baptist Hospital, and Board of Directors of the National Conference; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell has received a host of well-deserved accolades including Man of the Year by the Arthritis Foundation, Nashville Chapter; Honorary Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation, Nashville Chapter; and Man of the Year by the Easter Seals Society, Nashville Chapter; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell is to be commended for his timeless efforts, energy and commitment in helping build the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission by assisting in the development of the By-Laws; overseeing the construction of the Nashville Convention Center and recruited/hired the first Executive Director; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hummell’s wisdom, experience and knowledge have been invaluable to the success of the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission and Nashville Convention Center and will be missed; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Burton H. Hummell for his work and accomplishments with the Metropolitan Convention Center Commission and Nashville Convention Center and wish him much success as he moves forward.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Burton H. Hummell upon his retirement with the Metropolitan Convention Center.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Burton H. Hummell.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
