RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-424

A resolution recognizing James E.K. Hildreth, Ph.D, M.D. for his extraordinary medical exploits.

WHEREAS, Dr. James E.K. Hildreth is an internationally known AIDS scientist who currently serves as Director of the Center for AIDS Health Disparities Research (CAHDR), a National Institutes of Health funded center at Meharry Medical College, and Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College since July of 2005; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of current Director of the CAHDR, Dr. Hildreth has been instrumental in assisting with the pursuit of solutions to problems contributing to the spread of HIV, while using state of the art technology to find new drugs and strategies for AIDS prevention and treatment; and

WHEREAS, the leadership, commitment, and devotion that Dr. Hildreth has shown speak volumes about his desire to improve the quality of life; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hildreth received his M.D. at Johns Hopkins, his Ph.D. from Oxford University in England, and his A.B. in Chemistry from Harvard University; and

WHEREAS, Dr, James E.K. Hildreth, Ph.D, M.D. is actively involved with many community and civic organizations as a member of the Lipid Sciences’ Viral Scientific Advisory Board, the Director of the Center for Health Disparities Research in HIV, Professor of Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and Professor (Adjunct) of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hildreth is a current member of the National Institutes of Health/the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (AIDS Research Review Study Section), where his research has been focused on the relationship between adhesion molecules, lipid rafts, and the biology of human retroviruses (HIV); and

WHEREAS, some of Dr. Hildreth major accomplishments have included publishing more than 70 articles on related subjects and is an inventor on three patents/pending applications; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hildreth’s hard work, perseverance, ingenuity and expertise to his profession will no doubt be of great benefit to his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hildreth discovered that the cyclodextrin molecule that removes cholesterol from HIV virus causing the virus to lose its ability to infect and some 39.4 million people are living with HIV and AIDS world wide; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes James E.K. Hildreth, Ph.D, M.D. for his professionalism, his accomplishments and his outstanding contributions and we congratulate him for his discovery and his commitment to helping eradicate the spread of HIV and AIDS.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. James E.K. Hildreth, Ph.D, M.D. for his extraordinary medical exploits.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to James E.K. Hildreth Ph.D, M.D.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
