RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-403

A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to name the Highway 100 bridge over the South Harpeth River in honor of Jessie William Gammons.

WHEREAS, Jessie William Gammons, a longtime resident of the Bellevue community, served his country valiantly during World War II as forward observer; and

WHEREAS, while serving a tour of duty in Africa and Italy, Mr. Gammons was ambushed by enemy fire and sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and arm, for which he was honored with the Purple Heart award; and

WHEREAS, Jessie William Gammons, who was well-loved in the Bellevue community and was always willing to help out a neighbor in need, passed away suddenly on July 20, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gammons farmed on property along the South Harpeth and loved to fish on this portion of the river; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Highway 100 bridge over the South Harpeth River be named in honor of Jessie William Gammons.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to name the Highway 100 bridge over the South Harpeth River the “Corporal Jessie William Gammons Memorial Bridge”.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
