RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-382
A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works and the Traffic and Parking Commission to consider designating certain areas of Davidson County as special event speed zones.
WHEREAS, on November 24, 2007, 8-year-old Max Nance was killed after being struck by a taxicab minivan while attempting to cross 25th Avenue on his way to a Vanderbilt football game; and
WHEREAS, although it was determined that the taxicab was not exceeding the posted speed limit at the time of the accident, this tragic incident brought to light the need for motorists to pay careful attention to pedestrians during special events; and
WHEREAS, the creation of special event zones similar to school speed zones in areas that frequently have special events, such as college campuses, stadiums, arenas, and concert halls would slow vehicles down in special event areas and make motorists more aware of pedestrians in the area; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Department of Public Works and the Traffic and Parking Commission establish special event zones to be in effect prior to, during, and immediately after special events.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works and the Traffic and Parking Commission to consider designating certain areas of Davidson County as special event speed zones.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Billy Lynch, the Director of the Department of Public Works, and to each member of the Traffic and Parking Commission, Mayor Karl Dean, and to Paul Ney, the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
