RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-356

A resolution recognizing and congratulating Jake Simons on his accomplishments and participation in the 2008 National Geographic Bee.

WHEREAS, Jake Simons, a seventh-grader at Harding Academy, who on April 4, 2008, became Tennessee’s 2008 Geographic Bee state champion, advanced to the National Geographic Bee held on May 20-21, 2008 in Washington DC; and

WHEREAS, the winning question in the championship round of the 2008 Tennessee Geographic Bee was: Dragon’s Mouths and Serpent’s Mouth separate the island of Trinidad from which South American country? and Mr. Simons correctly answered Venezuela to become state champion and represent Tennessee at the National Geographic Bee; and

WHEREAS, since the first National Geography Bee in 1989, established by the National Geographic Society, millions of students have competed each year for prizes, scholarships and the honor of being named national champion; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee's Geographic Bee champion Jake Simons scored solid points in Tuesday's May 20th preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee competition in Washington, D.C., but not enough to advance to the final round; and

WHEREAS, Jake’s achievements are a source of pride for his family; studying geography since he was 6 years old and saying his own travels have helped him throughout competitions, he followed the footsteps of his two older brothers Dallas and Cody who were also named Tennessee’s Geographic Bee State champion’s in past years; and

WHEREAS, when Jake is not studying geography he enjoys participating in soccer and basketball at Harding Academy where his favorite academic subjects are history and mathematics; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Jake Simons for not only winning Tennessee’s 2008 Geographic Bee but for his participation at the National’s and recognize his impressive achievements.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Jake Simons on his accomplishments and participation in the 2008 National Geographic Bee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Jake Simons.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
