RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-321

A resolution honoring the life of former Vice Mayor John David Scobey.

WHEREAS, on May 11, 2008, Nashville and Davidson County lost one its most beloved and respected public servants in the passing of former Vice Mayor John David Scobey; and

WHEREAS, David Scobey was elected as a councilmember-at-large in 1963 to become a charter member of the first Metropolitan Council after the consolidation of the city and county governments; and

WHEREAS, David Scobey was elected Vice Mayor of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County in 1971, a position which he held until 1995, presiding over six councils and serving with four mayors; and

WHEREAS, Vice Mayor Scobey was revered and respected by those Members of Council serving with him, and was known for his efficiency in conducting council meetings and his vast knowledge of parliamentary procedure; and

WHEREAS, while serving as Vice Mayor, Mr. Scobey, amongst his many accomplishments, helped shepherd legislation through the Council to build a downtown convention center, to bring professional football to the city, and to make our parks system one of the finest in the country; and

WHEREAS, David Scobey proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his public service, David Scobey had an exemplary athletic career as a basketball and baseball player, coach, and collegiate referee; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Scobey officiated twelve major football bowl games including the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Gator Bowl and Cotton Bowl; and

WHEREAS, David Scobey received a number of awards in honor of his contributions to athletics, including induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, the National Football Foundation Outstanding Football Official Award in 2000, and the Nashville Sports Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004; and

WHEREAS, John David Scobey was also deeply devoted to his family as a loving husband and as a father to sons David, Jr. and Stan, and to three daughters, Marilyn Swing, Carol Price and Joan Dolen, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council remember and honor the life of former Vice Mayor John David Scobey, and express its sincere condolences to Mr. Scobey’s family.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the life of former Vice Mayor John David Scobey.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a printed scroll to be presented to the family of John David Scobey.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
