RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-258

A resolution recognizing the Nashville Sounds 2008 Reading Club Program.

WHEREAS, the Nashville Sounds Reading Club program has enrolled over 175,000 students from over 450 schools and public libraries participating in 2008, from the Nashville area and surrounding counties throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, in the 11 year history of the Nashville Sounds program over 1.4 million students have joined together to read more than 11 million books; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of this program is to tie children’s natural affection for baseball to the bigger goal of promoting literacy and encouraging a lifelong love for reading; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Sounds Reading Club program supports area schools in their ongoing endeavor to build strong readers by creating exciting incentives and rewards for children who continue to read more throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, this program is designed as in incentive-based reading program that allows students to earn prizes for reading books; and

WHEREAS, this programs concept is based around a baseball diamond, with home plate being the final goal, with the teacher setting the reading goal for the children making it adaptable for any age, grade or reading level, that once a child reaches a base they are rewarded; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes this program and encourages children to read.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Nashville Sounds 2008 Reading Club Program.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Brandon Vonderharr, President of the Nashville Sounds Foundation.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
