RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-186

A resolution recognizing and congratulating Mr. Joe Casey upon his induction into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

WHEREAS, Joe Casey, who devoted twenty-four seasons as a basketball official will be inducted into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Hall of Fame on March 15, 2008, a most befitting recognition of his outstanding service in officiating of High School athletics; and

WHEREAS, this remarkable man has dedicated over twenty years of overall service as an official with the TSSAA, until giving it up in 1974, not long after becoming the Police Chief of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, after joining TSSAA, Joe Casey proved to be an excellent basketball official; becoming well-known for the fairness of his judgment and his knowledge and understanding of the sport he officiated; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career, Joe Casey officiated many important high school games, including state tournaments in 1960 and ’66, an AAU National Championship game in New Mexico and a game between the Nashville Business College women’s team and the Russian national team; and

WHEREAS, the most important game Mr. Casey officiated in his career was the Father Ryan’s 52-51 victory over Pearl High in 1965 at the Municipal Auditorium; this game marked the state’s first contest between an all-black school and a predominantly white school during the period of integration; and

WHEREAS, for the above accomplishments, and because of his impeccable moral standards and impressive work ethic, Mr. Casey has been selected for induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulates Mr. Joe Casey upon his induction into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Hall of Fame and wish him the best for the future.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Mr. Joe Casey upon his induction into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Joe Casey.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
