RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-177

A resolution recognizing sisters Mary O’Neil and Catherine Gross for their generous donation to the City of Nashville.

WHEREAS, Mary O’Neil and Catherine Gross are recognized for their generous donation of 188 acres located at 5619 and 5623 Old Hickory Boulevard as an addition to Beaman Park; and

WHEREAS, they donated their family farm, known as the Proctor Farm, to add to the acreage of Beaman Park, bringing the park's total acreage from about 1500 acres to almost 1700 acres; and

WHEREAS, the sisters made the donation in December, 2006, to Greenways for Nashville (GFN) a friends group to Metro Parks which held the land until it could be accepted by Metro; and

WHEREAS, the land donation has been approved by Council and was officially transferred to Metro on Tuesday, January 8, 2008; and

WHEREAS, the land is located directly adjacent to Beaman Park that protects an important view shed for the park as well as provides much needed flat land and road frontage and also features wooded hills and valleys on which trails will meander; and

WHEREAS, it includes a historic barn which will be used for Parks purposes, including nature programs; and

WHEREAS, the donation constitutes a significant contribution to our Metro Parks system and is a model example of stewardship and benevolence in conserving natural and scenic resources for the enjoyment and recreational use by the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes sisters Mary O’Neil and Catherine Gross and express to them their deepest appreciation for their contribution.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing sisters Mary O’Neil and Catherine Gross for their generous donation to the City of Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mary O’Neil and Catherine Gross.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
