RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-176

A resolution recognizing the passing of Kindell Stephens, Sr.

WHEREAS, the passing of Kindell Stephens, Sr., on January 2, 2008, has brought a great loss to his family and friends of this beloved individual; and

WHEREAS, Kindell Stephens, Sr., was born on June 23, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio, was educated in the public schools of Cincinnati, graduated from Taft High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Fisk University in Nashville, was united in marriage to the love of his life the late Lorna Louise Coleman, and from there blessed union were born Kindell, Jr., Walter and Lauren and was a member of Temple Church; and

WHEREAS, during his lifetime, which spanned 66 years, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers after graduating from college, before a career ending injury, he then went to work at Fisk University as a dorm director, before taking the role of Sports Information Director at Tennessee State University, where he started numerous sports programs, before leaving to work for the Tennessee Department of Employment Security before eventually returning back to TSU were he resumed the role of sports Information Director as well as “the voice” of the TSU Tigers, he also was writing a book on the history of TSU athletics up until his untimely passing; and

WHEREAS, those who were privileged to share the love and friendship of Kindell Stephens, Sr., will long miss his presence and guidance, and he will surely be remembered with great affection an admiration; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council, do hereby express and extend our sincere sympathy to the members of the family upon the solemn occasion of his home-going.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the passing of Kindell Stephens, Sr.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Kindell Stephens, Sr.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
