RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-175
A resolution recognizing the contributions and services of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Nation McFarland of Nashville, Tennessee.
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council, as well as the City of Nashville, were saddened to learn of the passing of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Nation McFarland, on January 02, 2008, and we recognize her contributions as a tireless public servant; and
WHEREAS, she served with the Metropolitan Davidson County School system for nearly 30 years before retiring to practice law for 15 years, and
WHEREAS, in 1983 Mrs. McFarland entered the political arena being elected as Councilmember of District 4 to serve in the Metropolitan Council; and
WHEREAS, she was elected to office by those who saw her as a leader that would be considerate of the wishes of her constituents; and
WHEREAS, she served on the Traffic and Parking Commission where she diligently sought to improve conditions in a most capable and dedicated fashion; and
WHEREAS, throughout her life, Gwendolyn E. Nation McFarland was involved in Tennessee Democratic politics, she worked tirelessly as past president of the National Federation of Democratic Women, served six 4-year terms as state Democratic chairwoman and was vice chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party from 1984 - 1983; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. McFarland, a member of St. James the Less Episcopal Church, is survived by her husband and soul mate of 60 years, George H. McFarland; her two children, Anthony J. McFarland and Joni E. Baker, brother Clark Nation, and three grandchildren, Matthew, Pat and Thomas McFarland; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council take a moment to remember the bountiful life of this exceptional public servant and human being and express to the family of Gwendolyn E. Nation McFarland our deepest sympathy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the contributions and services of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Nation McFarland of Nashville, Tennessee.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Nation McFarland.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
