RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-124
A resolution recognizing Nashville’s Annual African American Street Festival.
WHEREAS, Nashville’s Annual African American Street Festival is held the third weekend in September on the main campus of Tennessee State University; and
WHEREAS, last year marked the 25th anniversary of the African American Street Festival which brings honor and acclaim to the State of Tennessee and attracts more than 100,000 people interested in African and African American culture; and
WHEREAS, Nashville’s Annual African American Street Festival is sponsored by the African American Cultural Alliance, a non-profit organization that promotes the cultural and historical background of people of African descent; and
WHEREAS, the African American Cultural Alliance was acknowledged for their work in erecting a statue to honor those who courageously fought to secure the rights of freedom and liberty for themselves and their families while serving with the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the myriad vendors selling Afro centric wares and authentic African food, scheduled programs include lectures on Africa and American history and culture, a children’s pavilion, rites and passage clinic, storytelling and an eclectic mix of musical venues; and
WHEREAS, this festival promises a unique social and educational experience detailing the important aspects of African and African American culture; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the annual African American Street Festival which provides wholesome family entertainment and fun for all ages, from all walks of life.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Nashville’s Annual African American Street Festival.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
