RESOLUTION NO. RS2008-118

A resolution recognizing and congratulating Miss Kristen Herring upon being crowned Miss Black Tennessee USA, 2007-2008.

WHEREAS, the city of Nashville is very proud to recognize Miss Kristen Herring, recently crowned Miss Black Tennessee USA, 2007-2008; and

WHEREAS, during her reign as Miss Black Tennessee 2007-2008, Kristen displayed her grace and poise throughout the State; and

WHEREAS, in pursuing her dream, Miss Kristen Herring, is currently a doctoral candidate in the department of biochemistry at Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, Miss Herring graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was a member of the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the chapter’s secretary, served as treasurer for her freshman dorm council and the sophomore class, and was First Attendant to Miss Spelman College; and

WHEREAS, Miss Herring is the recipient of numerous academic achievements including induction into the Golden Key International Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society, Who’s Who Among US College Students, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in addition to an award for the Best Chemistry Student for the Pre-Freshman Summer Science Program and recognition on the National Dean’s List and a recipient of the Dean Dewitt’s Tuition Scholarship; and

WHEREAS, she lends her time, energy and talents to a number of worthwhile organizations, including serving as secretary of the Organization of Black Graduate and Professional Students (OBGAPS) at Vanderbilt University, secretary of the Nashville Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NAASC), and secretary and membership chair of National Urban League Young Professionals of Middle Tennessee (ULYPMT), as well as the Alliance for Cultural Diversity in Research (ACDR) at Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, in her free time Miss Herring enjoys music and performance art; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Miss Kristen Herring upon winning the Miss Black Tennessee 2007-2008 crown and commend her for her persistence and hard work for the service to her community, and extend our best wishes for every success and happiness in her future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Miss Kristen Herring upon being crowned Miss Black Tennessee USA, 2007-2008.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Miss Kristen Herring.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
