RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-40

A resolution recognizing the 80th Anniversary of the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

WHEREAS, the year 2007 marks an important milestone for the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, as a provider of a wide range of programs and services for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, celebrating eighty (80) years of serving the deaf, hard of hearing and hearing population of Davidson County with offices located in Franklin, Clarksville, Fairview, Southern Kentucky and a new satellite office planned for Murfreesboro; and

WHEREAS, not only does this facility provide supportive services to those deaf and hard of hearing to help individuals to live independently, but provides quality services that promote the highest possible level of functioning in all areas of their life; and

WHEREAS, the not for profit began in 1927 as a lip reading class by Margaret Lane Washington who herself lost her hearing and found that there were no classes offered for persons who were Deaf and Hard of Hearing; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Washington taught her first speech class to 13 students at the Watkins Institute in downtown Nashville that became the nucleus of today’s League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing that brought about changes in technological advances including digital hearing aids, medical breakthroughs like Cochlear implants, improved diagnostic techniques, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and an increasing number of people needing help for hearing loss; and

WHEREAS, the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’s mission is to unite the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing communities through education, services and support to empower individuals to achieve their full potential with a vision of “There are no barriers for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people to reach their goals.”

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for their public service to the community as they celebrate their 80th year anniversary.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 80th Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Les Hutchinson, President and CEO on behalf of the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
