RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2103

A resolution requesting Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, Congressman Jim Cooper, the Mayor, the Department of Public Works, the Board of Parks and Recreation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to take the action necessary to stabilize the west bank of the Cumberland River between CSX Railroad tracks and Jefferson Street.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Nashville Civic Design Center, recently developed a 20-year plan for the downtown riverfront in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, implementation of the first 5-year phase of the riverfront plan is currently underway, which includes significant modifications to both banks of the Cumberland River; and

WHEREAS, the west bank of the Cumberland River from the CSX Railroad tracks north to Jefferson Street is already developed for residential use; and

WHEREAS, this section of river bank has experienced significant erosion over the years, which is endangering the exiting residential development; and

WHEREAS, if the effects from the erosion are not remedied, substantial damage could be caused to the existing structures as well as continued environmental degradation in the area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the federal and local governments work together to shore up the Cumberland River bank in the downtown area to protect the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, Congressman Jim Cooper, the Mayor, the Department of Public Works, the Board of Parks and Recreation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to take the action necessary to stabilize the west bank of the Cumberland River between CSX Railroad tracks and Jefferson Street.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, to Congressman Jim Cooper, to Mayor Bill Purcell, to Billy Lynch, the Director of the Department of Public Works, to Roy Wilson, the Director of Parks, and to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Section 3. The Mayor, the Department of Public Works, and the Board of Parks and Recreation are further requested to respond to the Council as to the action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
