A resolution recognizing and congratulating the members of the Tennessee State University Quiz Bowl Team upon their winning the 2007 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.

WHEREAS, making a stellar showing in this year’s competition, Tennessee State University’s Quiz Bowl Team defeated Florida A&M University to claim the 2007 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge during competition in Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge was established by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in 1989 for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to award grants to improve campus life through facility improvements and expanded academic resources; and

WHEREAS, this year’s competition brought 320 college students, as well as faculty and staff, from 64 Historically Black Colleges and Universities from across the country to compete in the three-day tournament to win grants and glory for their academic institutions; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee State University Quiz Bowl Team showcased their skills and intellect by quickly and accurately answering questions on world history, science, literature religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture; and

WHEREAS, TSU’s team members included David Macias, Captain, Senior Political Science Major, Dwayne Morrow, Jr., Senior, Political Science, Larry Cook, Jr., Senior, Electrical Engineering, Ismaila Badjie, Senior, Bio-chemistry, and Milton Rice, Senior, Political Science who were led under the tutelage of esteemed coach Dr. John Miglietta; Associate Professor of Political Science; and

WHEREAS, staff who so greatly contributed to the success of the 2007 TSU Quiz Bowl Team included Dr. Sandra Holt, Director of the Honors Program; Dr. H. Coleman McGinnis, retired professor; Professor Julian Blackshear, Political Science; Dr. Anthony Blasi, Sociology; Dr. Elizabeth Dachowski, History; Dr. Joel Dark, History; Dr. Melissa Hull, English; Mr. Keith Morgan, Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports; Dr. Emily Orlando, English; Dr. Nels Pearson, English; Dr. Maximiano Rivera, Honors Program; Dr. Erik Schmeller, History; and Professor Lane Spelling, Nursing Education; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to recognize the members of the Tennessee State University Quiz Bowl Team upon their winning the 2007 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge for their superlative academic ability, to show its appreciation for their hard work and for the hard work of their coach, John Miglietta, and to wish them all continued success.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating the members of the Tennessee State University Quiz Bowl Team upon their winning the 2007 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Coach John Miglietta on behalf of the team.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
