RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2074

A resolution recognizing Councilmember At-Large Norman “Buck” Dozier for his honorable and astute service to the people of the City of Nashville.

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier, has for many years been a prominent and highly influential figure in the political, social, and civic lives of many, serving his constituents in numerous capacities, always working diligently at his elected duties and expanding the necessary efforts to understand the opposing sides of complex duties and it’s only fitting and proper that such a public servant be honored and recognized for his contributions; and

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier has served in the Metropolitan Government of Nashville over 20 years, he was elected to the Metropolitan Council three times, serving from 1987 to 1992 as an At Large member, before becoming Mayor Bredesen’s legislative liaison; and

WHEREAS, prior to his election in 2004 by an overwhelming county wide margin to serve again on the Metropolitan Council as an At Large member, while serving as a member of former Mayor Bredesen’s staff Buck was appointed in 1994 to Metro Fire Chief. As Fire Chief, Buck helped the department earn its first national accreditation for quality performance and management; and

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier currently serves on the Budget and Finance, Convention and Tourism, Planning, Zoning, Historical and Public Safety-Beer and Regulated Beverages Committees, in addition he serves as the Vice Chair of the Education Committee; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Dozier’s civic contributions include, serving on the Y-Cap Advisory Board, the Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s Board of Directors, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, while also serving as President of the Tennessee Christian Medical Center Advisory Board, he also was part of the Leadership Nashville Class of 1995 and then was elected to serve as the group’s Alumni association President along with being affiliated with numerous other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier is the recipient of numerous accolades which include receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the Citizen Commendation Award by the Metro Police Dept for assisting an officer in trouble, the FBI Letter of Commendation, the God and Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club, the Spiritual Aims Award from the Madison Kiwanis Club, and is a 3 time recipient of the Football Coach of the Year Award from the Nashville Banner; and

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier has played an instrumental role in passing legislation relating to such issues as the Nashville Airport Expansion; $124 million package for capital improvements at schools; the charter amendment allowing the Council greater oversight of the Metro Budget; and

WHEREAS, Councilmember At Large Buck Dozier is a proponent of good, responsible government and has made quite a difference in his community; and


WHEREAS, a native Nashvillian, Buck was born and raised in the Sylvan Park area, educated in our city's public school system, and is a graduate of David Lipscomb University. He's been married to Sandra, a preschool administrator, for 38 years and they've raised two children and four grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Dozier’s early career included teaching and coaching from there, he went on to serve as Family Life and Youth Minister at Madison Church of Christ and on the national lecture circuit and currently works as a Vice President for a Nashville mortgage company; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Councilmember At Large for his dedication, countless contributions and many good works to improving the quality of life for his fellow citizens and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Councilmember At-Large Norman “Buck” Dozier for his honorable and astute service to the people of the City of Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll of this Resolution to be presented to Councilmember At Large Norman “Buck” Dozier.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
