RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2073
A resolution recognizing Carol Etherington on receiving the 2007 Vanderbilt University Distinguished Alumna Award.
WHEREAS, Carol Etherington, was named the 2007 Vanderbilt University Distinguished Alumna, joining an elite group to receive the Alumni Association Board’s highest honor, an honor bestowed upon a Vanderbilt alumni whose accomplishments and contributions have had an indelible, positive and beneficial impact on humankind; and
WHEREAS, Carol Etherington, an assistant professor of nursing at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and a 1975 graduate of the school's master's program; and has worked for the advocacy of underserved and traumatized populations in local, national and international settings; has achieved tremendous success through her work and is well deserving of this recognition; and
WHEREAS, an expert in mental health, most of Etherington's work has focused on traumatized populations, creating effective community-based programs for the health and human rights of individuals, families and communities who have survived natural disasters, war, crime or other abuses; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from college, Etherington worked in rural Appalachia, providing health care for a largely indigent population and in 1975, she initiated the Victim Intervention Program in Nashville, one of the country's first police-based counseling programs in the U.S; and
WHEREAS, in the 1990s, Etherington became actively involved with Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and was instrumental in strengthening the role of mental health in the organization's program and became the first nurse elected to the group's U.S. Board of Directors, serving two terms as board president; and
WHEREAS, Etherington has also continued her work on missions in the U.S., including the aftermath of Sept. 11, the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and Hurricane Katrina and she remains a Red Cross disaster volunteer and, as a community health nurse, participates in local and regional projects related to refugee and immigrant populations; and
WHEREAS, through her invaluable efforts she has made immeasurable contributions to benefit communities throughout the United States, and has truly made a positive impact on countless lives; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Carol Etherington for her distinguished and trailblazing career and commend her for her many years of exemplary service.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Carol Etherington on receiving the 2007 Vanderbilt University Distinguished Alumna Award.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Carol Etherington.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
