RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2072

A resolution recognizing and commending Mr. Bruce Wood for his outstanding public service to Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County government and Metropolitan Council commend the volunteer participation of citizens in civic matters and acknowledge environmental challenges including degradation of water, air pollution, and environmental injustice; and

WHEREAS, Nashville as the State Capitol of Tennessee and a national center for health care attracts many visitors who become permanent residents including Bruce Wood who in 1984 moved here from out of state to find successful treatment for his atypical bipolar condition and post traumatic stress syndrome; and

WHEREAS, Bruce Wood joined with concerned citizens in December 1988 to stop the planned $300 million expansion of the downtown incinerator; and 'Bring Urban Recycling to Nashville Today', now known as BURNT, was formed and continues to be active in environmental issues including solid waste, clean air and water, abuse of pesticides, and environmental injustice and offers research based positive solutions to difficult problems; and

WHEREAS, BURNT has demonstrated an ability to improve Nashville commercial real estate value by stopping chronic polluters, is a member of the Nashville Peace and Justice Center and Community Shares, and

WHEREAS, Bruce Wood is in his third term as an elected member of the Nashville Branch of the NAACP Executive Committee and has worked with the Nashville Branch of the NAACP and the State of Tennessee NAACP on environmental justice issues including the Dickson County Landfill, non-complying heavy industry such as North American Galvanizing, and White Way Cleaners; and

WHEREAS, Bruce Wood has received recognition from the Tennessee State Convention of the NAACP as recipient of the “Through the Storm” award; and

WHEREAS, Bruce Wood is a member of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Enoch Fuzz; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Bruce Wood for his long standing and on-going efforts to improve the environment and wish him continued success.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and commending Mr. Bruce Wood for his outstanding public service to Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Bruce Wood.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
