RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2048

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Transit Authority to require that all MTA bus drivers be CPR certified.

WHEREAS, according to statistics provided by the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac death from coronary heart disease occurs approximately 900 times each day in the United States; and

WHEREAS, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been repeatedly shown to substantially improve survival from sudden ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest; and

WHEREAS, immediate bystander CPR administered within 3-5 minutes of a heart attack greatly increase the odds of survival; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council is currently considering legislation that would require all taxicab drivers to be CPR certified in an effort to protect the health and safety of the passengers; and

WHEREAS, since MTA transports a large number of passengers each and every day, it is fitting and proper that all MTA bus drivers be certified, as well.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Transit Authority to require that all MTA bus drivers be CPR certified.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Paul Ballard, the CEO of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, and to each member of the Metropolitan Transit Authority Board.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Transit Authority is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than ninety (90) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
