RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-2045

A resolution requesting the Mayor and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau to consider the feasibility of establishing a Museum of Nashville History in the old Ben West Library or other suitable facility.

WHEREAS, the City of Nashville has a rich history spanning more than 225 years; and

WHEREAS, although the Tennessee State Museum is a wonderful facility devoted to state-wide history, Nashville is one of the largest cities in the county without a museum dedicated to the history of the city; and

WHEREAS, other cities within the southeast region have local history museums, such as the Vulcan Park Museum in Birmingham, the Atlanta History Center, and the Chattanooga Regional History Museum, which are well-attended by local residents and visitors alike; and

WHEREAS, Nashvillians are proud of their history and desire a place to take their children and out-of-town guests to learn more about our city; and

WHEREAS, a Museum of Nashville History would be an added tourist attraction to the downtown area, and would be a wonderful place for school field trips; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Mayor and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau examine the possibility of creating a local history museum in Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau to consider the feasibility of establishing a Museum of Nashville History in the old Ben West Library or other suitable facility.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Butch Spyridon, the President of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Section 3. The Mayor and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of creating a Museum of Nashville History within forty-five (45) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
